Pulling Together

Another utility no-show

Why is it utility companies never turn up when they say they will? Why do we have to spend many minutes listening to music when we want to find out whether they’re coming? How is that supposed to raise the country’s productivity? Every idle minute waiting in for a caller who doesn’t come or hanging on hold is a minute which is not available for productive work.

That is why I would like to see this country return to what it was in previous decades, where businesses answered the phone and put you through to the right department where staff knew what they were talking about and, though you might not get a specific time for an appointment you did know the job would be done on the day arranged and you could easily chase if something went wrong. We need a country where things happen, where services are available, where the Police will come when needed, where the roads are mended, trains run regularly, and systems work. At present we live in one where nothing works as it should. Six weeks after buying my house I still have no documentary evidence of my ownership. That has further impacts as the house needs upgrading before Winter and grants are supposed to be available to assist with the costs – but only if I can prove I own it. So, surprise surprise, the grants trumpeted by government are not actually accessible. How reminiscent of the Covid jabs we were all invited to take when no appointments were available. Then the Government reported a low take-up. Doubtless they will withdraw the grants on the basis the take up is low, simply because most people will want to improve their properties on moving in and at that time the long delay in registering ownership ensures they cannot.

I belong to a political party – the SDP. If none of the other parties want to make this country work, perhaps we will have to become the ones to do it. Let us set an example the rest of the world can follow, an example of how things should be, and can be.
